Studio Tech

Gather Pottery, a brand new community clay center located in Seattle’s Interbay neighborhood, is seeking a Studio Tech to join our team. Our studio is located at 1465 Elliott Ave W, convenient to bus lines and bike trails, and free parking is available. It is a beautiful, 4200-square foot space with high ceilings and tons of natural light. We offer memberships as well as classes, in addition to some retail (clay, glazes, and tools). Subject to change, we are tentatively planning a soft open for a limited number of members on July 1, with 8-week class sessions for students beginning 8/20.

The Studio Tech will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our pottery studio by handling kiln loading and firing, as well as the mixing and maintenance of glazes. We are looking for someone who is passionate about ceramics, possesses a positive, can-do attitude, and has experience in kiln operations. This is a part-time role, 3X per week, 3 hours per shift (flexible).

Responsibilities:

  • Load and unload kilns, ensuring proper placement and firing of pottery pieces

  • Operate kilns following established firing schedules and safety guidelines

  • Mix dry glazes, ensuring consistency and quality, with potential to create our own glazes in the future

  • Maintain glaze inventory, tracking usage and replenishing supplies as needed

  • Assist with the organization and cleanliness of the pottery studio, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for members and students

  • Collaborate with instructors and staff to support the smooth flow of classes and workshops

  • Provide technical guidance and assistance to studio members, as needed

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Experience loading and firing kilns, with a solid understanding of kiln operation and safety protocols

  • Knowledge of glaze mixing and maintenance, including proper measurement and application techniques

  • Genuine excitement and passion for ceramics and pottery

  • Positive, can-do attitude with a strong attention to detail

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience pugging clay is a plus

The pay rate for this position is $25/hour. Benefits include paid sick leave in compliance with local law. For employees regularly working 8 or more hours per week, we offer studio access equivalent to that of members, which includes access to the studio whenever it is open, as well as glazes and firing.
